GEAR Interview Program


The GEAR Interview Program is being held on February 18, 2020 with an optional overnight on the evening of February 17.

This is an invite-only program.

The invitational interview is a mandatory part of the selection process.

Registration is closed.

Unfortunately, there are no alternative days for the interviews.

Arrival and Departure Information

Guests arriving on Monday afternoon should go directly to Wallis Hall (Admissions) on our River Campus. Get maps and directions here. (See “On-Campus Visits” tab under “Visits & Events” for more details.)

Guests arriving on Tuesday morning should view the parking information below.

Arrival and Departure Times 
If you are staying overnight, please arrive between 1:00pm and 4:00pm on Monday, February 17. Otherwise, plan to arrive by 8:30 am on Tuesday, February 18.  All students should plan to depart at 4:30 pm on Tuesday.

Travel Methods

If you are driving and using a GPS, please enter 252 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester NY 14611 as your destination. This will bring you to the main entrance of The University of Rochester.

When you arrive at the Elmwood Avenue entrance to campus, be sure to stop at the Visitor Parking and Information Booth (straight ahead, in the middle of the street) for instructions on where to park and how to get to the Office of Admissions in Wallis Hall. Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early to ensure adequate time to park.

The University’s River Campus is about two miles from the Greater Rochester International Airport (airport code ROC). Commercial taxi service and car rental are available from the airport. Cab fare is approximately $10, depending on the number of people and luggage.

The Rochester city buses stop at several locations on the River Campus as well as the Medical Center and Eastman campuses on all routes. For schedule and bus route information, visit the Rochester Transportation Services page.

The Rochester Amtrak station is located at 320 Central Avenue. Taxi service and car rental are available, and the station is located on the municipal bus line that serves the River Campus.

Overnight Students

If you are driving to campus with family on Monday, proceed to the Visitor Parking and Information Booth on Wilson Boulevard to obtain a parking permit and directions to a lot.

If you are driving by yourself, you may keep your car on campus overnight.  We will need to know your license plate number prior to arrival.  You may need to move your car after check-in.

What to Expect

As our guest, your meals and on-campus lodging are included at no charge during your visit.

If you are planning to stay on campus Monday night, please bring:

  • Sleeping bag
  • Pillow
  • Towel
  • Additional spending money

All attendees should bring:

  • Appropriate dress clothes for your interview on Tuesday
  • Outdoor attire to accommodate the winter weather

A fun and informative day has been planned for all GEAR finalists and their parents. (Parent attendance is optional, but we think they will enjoy their visit.)

For parents and other family members, we offer a list of Rochester area hotels(If you specify that you’re visiting the University of Rochester, some hotels will offer special rates.)

Open Class List

Be sure to arrive to your chosen class 10 minutes early and introduce yourself to the professor. No registration required. Some classes may overlap with our scheduled program for the day, so you will need to make a decision about what you would like to attend.

Family members are welcome to join as well, though some classes may have limited seating.
