  • If you served on active duty, you might be eligible for education benefits offered by the Department of Veteran Affairs.
  • If you are the spouse or child of a service member, you may be eligible for transfer of the service member’s Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits.
  • If you are currently serving in the military, you may be eligible for funding offered through the Department of Defense Tuition Assistance program. Check your eligibility status and the amount for which you qualify with your service prior to enrolling.

We are committed to serving as a resource to veteran students and their families. The Financial Aid Office works in conjunction with the Veteran and Military Family Services Office to determine award eligibility and to make sure that it is disbursed to the student’s account when applicable.

The University of Rochester is a Yellow Ribbon school. Veterans with Post-9/11 coverage at the 100% level will have tuition and mandatory fees covered in full. Your VA benefits will cover up to the maximum amount allowed and the University matches dollar for dollar the remaining expenses.

How Veterans Educational Benefits May Affect Your Financial Aid

If you file your financial aid application before you know the amount of your actual veteran’s educational benefits, you will receive an estimated financial aid award based on non-eligibility for VA funding.

Once notification of your actual benefits is received, your financial aid award will be recalculated. While veteran’s benefits will not affect the amount of federal financial aid you are eligible for, they may change state, institutional, and private/alternative loan eligibility. For students receiving full VA benefits, a complete recalculation of the aid package will occur, which will result in the elimination of all need-based institutional grant funding. You will be notified of these changes via email and you will be able to log in and view the updates via FAOnline.


Types of Benefits

Program provides a monthly education benefit for up to 36 months based on several criteria such as the length of service, type of training being taken, course load, and if the DoD put extra funds in the veteran’s MGIB fund.

Tuition & Fees

For 2017–18, qualified veterans and dependent students with transferred benefits at the 100% benefit level will receive up to $22,805.34 per academic year toward tuition and fees (paid directly to the college). Those with less than 100% benefit will receive their prorated benefit level.

Books

Up to $1,000/year ($41.67/credit hour), unless your eligibility is prorated. This is paid directly to the veteran in a lump sum each semester.

Monthly benefit (Paid directly to the veteran or qualified dependent during periods of enrollment and while school is in session. Prorated based on course load.)

Qualified students are eligible for a monthly housing allowance equivalent to an E-5 rank with dependents based on the University of Rochester’s zip code ($1,527/month), unless your benefit level is prorated or you are not taking a full time course-load.

Tuition & Fees

Qualified veterans will receive 100% tuition and mandatory fees.

Full cost of books covered.

Monthly benefit (Paid directly to the veteran or qualified dependent during periods of enrollment and while school is in session. Prorated based on course load.)

Program provides a monthly subsistence allowance for living expenses for up to 48 months to assist qualified veterans with service-connected disabilities.

The Yellow Ribbon Program makes additional funds available to you if you are receiving Post-9/11 at the 100% benefit level. The University of Rochester has enrolled to participate in the program for the 20178–18 academic year for all eligible undergraduate and graduate students. The VA will match each additional dollar awarded by the University up to total tuition and mandatory fees. Dependents and spouses must have at least four months of transferred eligibility to cover a full semester.
