International Undergraduates

The University of Rochester is home to over 2,300 international students and scholars from around the globe. More than 100 countries are represented in the University’s international community, making our campuses vibrant and eclectic.

The University is committed to welcoming international students each year who represent cultural and ethnic diversity from a wide variety of countries. We understand that there are numerous factors that may affect a student’s ability to pay for their college education. In some cases, the University will work with students and their families to identify available financial resources to make it possible for the student to attend.

Application Details

International Students

The University of Rochester offers need-based financial aid to international undergraduate students. International students do not need to complete the FAFSA.

If you were born in the US and are now a citizen of another country, please follow the deadlines for a US Citizen.

Eligible non-citizens

An eligible non-citizen must be a permanent resident of the United States who is legally permitted to live and work in the United States. You may be required to show proof of your status to the Financial Aid Office by providing a copy of your Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551).

If you have questions about whether you are considered an eligible non-citizen for financial aid purposes, please contact us.

College Board’s IDOC

In addition to the CSS Profile, some Canadian and Mexican citizens may be required to provide additional documentation to the College Board’s IDOC Service, including institutional forms and relevant tax information. If you are required to send your application to IDOC, you will be emailed by the College Board. If another school has requested IDOC information from you and our school determines that we also need that information, we will have access to the documents you’ve submitted in response to the other school’s request. If we need anything further beyond those items, we’ll reach out via email to let you know.

To ensure that you receive IDOC correspondence, please add collegeboard.org, collegeboard.com, and student-1.com domains to the safe senders list on your email system.

If you have questions regarding the IDOC process, check out their IDOC Tutorial or call them at 1 (866) 897-9881. If you have further questions about the IDOC process at Rochester, feel free to contact your financial aid counselor.

CSS Profile

The CSS Profile is used to determine your eligibility for need-based University of Rochester grant funding.

Be aware that there is a cost for filing the CSS Profile, but the College Board is able to waive the application fee for those families that qualify. During the application process, the College Board will determine if you are eligible for the fee waiver based on the information you provide on the Profile.

The CSS Profile will become available on October 1, 2023 for the 2024–25 academic year.
