Class of 2021 Profile

The University of Rochester offered admission to potential first-year students from all US states and territories, and 135 foreign countries, up from last year’s record 111. The top ten states range from Massachusetts and Illinois to California and Texas. The top ten countries include many from almost every China province and Indian state, but also[…]

Rochester’s 166th Class

Rochester’s 166th Class moved in this week, bringing 1,335 freshmen and more than 100 transfer students to the sunny and significantly reconstructed River Campus. The Class is half men and half women. Fewer than half are White, non-Hispanic, making Rochester’s 5,300 undergraduates overall “minority-majority.” The oldest entering student is 38, and the youngest is 15.[…]

Rochester Admissions Update: Early…Huge…Wow…

Rochester’s growth as a top private university has been epic since 2006. We’ve added 17 campus buildings and a second (and huge) retail center next to campus (with Moe’s and Insomnia Cookies … dangerous to my diet). The major, even the concept, is so new that Rochester is the only place to offer it. A collaborative brainchild of[…]

Priorities: Reading All Over the Lines

After ten weeks of bribing a spectacular army of readers (like Patrick O’Neill here) with snacks, I’ve signed almost 4,000 decision letters addressed to students who had applied Early Decision or for Priority Review (PR) notification. Looking back so far, I’ve discovered exciting (and bruising) results. For context on the “bruising”: Rochester readers have to[…]

New Concepts About Admissions for Chinese (Really Any) Applicants

I received a thoughtful email with questions from an enterprise in China: “Our organization [works] with UK universities [focusing] on key personal skills such as problem solving, teamwork, communication, improving learning style, research, and presentation. All of our programs give a structured curriculum for developing these skills, as well as a portfolio. “. . .[…]
